god is good

The Only Constant in an Ever-Changing World

“I got a new car! God is good!” “I got the job! God is good!”

“I’m cancer free! God is good!”

These are types of phrases I hear from Christians often, but what I don’t hear is,

“My car won’t start. God is good!”

“I lost my job. God is good!”

“I have cancer. God is good!”

Why is it that when everything is going well it’s easy to praise God, but we don’t necessarily think to praise Him when things aren’t going so well?

The fact is God is good no matter what. He is constant amidst an ever-changing world, so even when life isn’t good, that doesn’t change the fact that God is good.

It’s hard to praise God when nothing seems to go right and every direction we look all we see is one bad thing after another. Like losing a job, losing a friend or family member, having car problems, having health issues and so on.

There is one man in the Bible that immediately comes to mind when I think about someone who praised God when he lost everything, and that man is Job.

In Job 1 we read that Satan was allowed to test Job, so he killed all of Job’s children and all of his livestock. After every messenger had finish telling Job the news he “arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. He said,

‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.’” Job 1:20-21

Then Satan gave Job boils over his entire body. His wife came to him and told him to curse God, but Job responded by saying, “‘You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” Job 2:10

In the midst of great adversity Job still chose to praise God. Even when we face hard times that doesn’t mean that God is not good. His goodness doesn’t depend on our circumstances. It is in those tough circumstances when we must learn to lean on God and depend on Him alone. But we must not forget that even in the good times, it is still important to lean on Him and not take things for granted.

We are told that we will face adversity and challenges in this life. No one comes out unscathed. However, even when we can’t see why God allows us to go through difficult times, we still must continue to trust that there is a purpose for what we are going through. God’s ways are higher than our ways, and we cannot always understand them, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t trust Him.

Even when life may seem uncertain continue to say God is good and your perspective and attitude might just change from worry and fear, to hope and peace. Continue trusting in God because He will never change, so that means that He will always come through in the end. Like one of my favorite pastor’s Perry Noble says, “If it ain’t good, God ain’t done.”
